What is Lived Experience?
At The Support Yard, lived experience refers to the first hand knowledge and insight gained by individuals who have faced mental health challenges themselves, whether that includes stress, anxiety, depression, addiction, grief, or other forms of emotional distress.
In the UK building materials supply industry, this could include experiences shaped by long hours, high-pressure environments, isolation, or the unique demands of physical and supply chain work.
We recognise that those who have “been there” themselves bring powerful understanding, empathy, and hope to others navigating similar struggles. That’s why lived experience is at the heart of our peer-led support and recovery focused coaching.
.
What is a Lived Experience Peer Support Guide?
A Peer Support Guide is someone who uses their own lived experience of mental health challenges, recovery, or trauma to support others going through similar experiences. They’re trained to provide emotional, social, and practical support, not as clinicians, but as equals who have ‘been there’.

Core roles of a Lived Experience Peer Support Guide
emotional support
Offer empathy, active listening, and a non-judgmental presence.
Share their own recover story, when helpful, to instil hope.
practical guidance
Help people set recovery goals, (e.g, returning to work, reducing stress).
Offer strategies and resources for coping, based on personal experience.
advocacy
Empower people to speak up for their needs in workplaces, services, or in their personal lives.
Sometimes act as a bridge between the person and professionals or services.
model recovery
Show that recovery is possible by living as an example.
Promote self-determination and personal strengths.
reduce stigma
Normalise conversations about mental health, especially in environments (like the construction industry), where stigma may be high.
Create safe, relatable spaces to talk.
what we don’t do
We are not therapists, doctors or case managers.
We don’t diagnose or treat, but we are here to complement professional care.
Benefits to the building materials supply sector
Our Lived Experience Peer Support Guides understand the demands of the supply chain, yards, sales pressures and physical roles. They speak the same language and offer relatable support without clinical jargon.
Our services are confidential and non-judgmental. Sometimes it’s easier to talk to someone who isn’t your manager or HR. Peer support creates a safe, stigma-free space for honest conversation.
Through early intervention, our Lived Experience Peer Support Guides can help spot signs of stress, burnout or crisis before problems escalate. A simple check-in could prevent long-term absence or breakdown.
And, by promoting emotional wellbeing and encouraging open conversations, peer support strengthens team morale, trust and overall culture. Our Lived Experience Peer Support Guides can help people rebuild confidence, set goals, and gradually return to work after a period of mental health leave, with someone walking alongside them in their journey.
